The console was situated at the stage left / auditorium right end of the Grand Circle with a good view of the stage. Moved to London Palladium in 1941 following bombing of King Street. 1935: Original / Prototype: King Street Strand Electric Theatre (demo theatre). The recently discovered specifications from 19, for installations which never came to fruition, show the efforts made to customise every detail of the console to each situation.Ī specially-made church organ console remotely controlled banks of resistance dimmers which were connected to constant-speed, motor driven shafts via magnetic clutches Installations: The Light Consoles lasting legacy was to progress the technology of lighting control from a complex on-stage mechanical device to a remote control which could be located where the operator could actually see what was being lit. This revolutionary lighting control, and the ubiquitous Pattern 23 spotlight became synonymous with Fred Bentham and Strand.

The Strand Light Console is designed to give an operator, seated in full view of the stage, absolute control of all the lighting circuits that make up a modern stage installation, whatever the size of the theatre. We certainly won't 'LIKE' the Avalon Theater on facebook as we were encouraged.Revolutionary lighting control, based on a Compton organ console, giving the operator a view of the stage for the first time. We will think twice before attending another show. We have enjoyed many evenings at the Avalon. The Avalon needs to identify their customer service standards which focus on the paying guest vs. That is certainly OK if they are not impeding on the enjoyment of customers. Last night there were twice as many volunteer ushers as needed, obviously attracted by the opportunity to hear the Kingston Trio for free. The Avalon Theater needs to establish guidelines for their volunteers and enforce them so the experience of the paying customers is not negatively impacted. As a volunteer in several organizations, I know there are guidelines for volunteer behavior. I realize the importance of volunteers to non profit organizations.

One option would have been to switch seats with the paying couple, with the volunteer ushers taking the back corner seats. This was after the woman complained to the volunteer about her assigned seat and asked to be reseated. Two other volunteers ushers pulled up chairs and sat in front of two paying customers who were unhappily seated in the rear corner next to the door. The inconsiderate behavior of the tone deaf volunteer was not an aberration.

My husband and I spent good money to hear the Kingston Trio, not to listen to a free loading tone deaf octogenarian. While there was limited audience participation on several of the songs, NO ONE ELSE sang every word of every song. He went on to reminisce loudly about when and where he first listened to the Kingston Trio 50+ years ago. He knew every word, but none of the notes! He was totally tone deaf and massacred every song. Then he felt compelled to sing every word of every song the Kingston Trio was performing. He began by using his iPhone to take flash pictures of the performance. Unfortunately our experience was ruined by an inconsiderate volunteer usher, who decided to sit in a vacant seat next to us. Last night, we went to the Kingston Trio concert at the lovely Avalon Theater.
